Give your workout a boost!

With the warmer weather, heading outdoors can help give your workout a much-needed boost. More than just a change of scenery, outdoor workouts can have some impressive benefits:

  • Variety. Whether you’re walking, running, cycling, hiking or swimming, when you’re navigating an outdoor terrain you’re encountering a changing environment. Adapting to inclines and obstacles keeps things interesting and gets your mind and body working in a way that an indoor treadmill or elliptical trainer doesn’t.
  • It’s free! While you can pay to participate in outdoor running clinics or boot camps or to enter a public swimming pool, it doesn’t have to cost you anything to get outside and move. There are no gym fees to walk through your neighbourhood and the only equipment you need is your own body (and a comfortable pair of shoes).
  • Fresh air and sunshine. Exercising outdoors is a great way to ensure you’re getting your daily dose of vitamin D (while practicing proper sun safety, of course). Getting out for a walk in the woods has been shown to have many health benefits, including improving your blood pressure, boosting your mental health and possibly even decreasing your cancer risk.

Be prepared!

To ensure a great workout in the great outdoors, preparation is key. Pay attention to the temperature and avoid extremes by scheduling your workouts either early in the day or later in the evening when the sun is less intense. A lightweight hat and some UVA- and UVB-protective sunglasses will help protect your head and eyes from the sun. And perhaps most importantly, make sure you drink enough fluids to stay hydrated.

When you’re working out, especially in the heat, it’s possible to become dehydrated even before you start feeling thirsty. So drink up. Make sure you bring enough water with you, or that you will have easy access to water wherever you are going.

It’s recommended that Canadian adults accumulate a minimum of 150 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity each week. When exercise is enjoyable, those 150 minutes will fly by. So grab a friend, get outside, and get moving! Just remember to bring some water (and your Ester-C® Energy Boost!).
