Fall fitness routine

Fall fitness routine

Why wait for January to get a new start on your fitness goals? Autumn is a great time to shake up your routine and get moving more. Here are some fall fitness tips to help you get started.

Hike it or bike it.

Just because there’s a “ber” at the end of the month, doesn’t mean you can’t still get outside. Autumn is a great season for brisk walks, invigorating hikes, and scenic bike rides. Take in the changing leaves and fresh crisp air as you stroll, climb, or cycle your way to better health. To keep comfortable, dress in layers of breathable, moisture-wicking materials that won’t cause you to overheat as your workout heats up.

Take it inside.

When the fall weather won’t cooperate with your fitness plans, you can always get a good workout in your own living room. Try a new fitness video, dust off the treadmill or elliptical trainer, or run up and down the stairs (while carrying laundry for bonus points). You don’t need a lot of fancy gym gear or a spacious studio to get results; your own bodyweight can be your best fitness equipment. Push the coffee table out of the way, throw down a yoga mat, and get to work.

Shake it up.

So you can’t swim in the lake or play beach volleyball for a few months. That doesn’t mean your workouts have to be boring. Use the change of seasons to jumpstart a new activity. From hot yoga to spinning, aqua fit to indoor climbing, there are plenty of fall fitness options to choose from.

Get fit with friends.

Whether you’re new to working out or just need a way to stay motivated, having the company and support of others can help. Enlist a workout buddy or buddies to help you stay on track (literally). The fun doesn’t have to end when the Pilates class does – why not create an online group to check in and cheer each other on? A little friendly competition is often just what it takes to light a fitness fire under your feet.

Don’t sabotage yourself.

A healthy fall fitness routine is a great way to improve your wellbeing. But if you’re going to do the work on the trail, at the gym, or on your yoga mat, you don’t want to undo it in the kitchen. Support your healthy activities with healthy eating habits. Fresh and nutritious foods are plentiful in autumn – think pumpkins, sweet potatoes, apples, Brussels sprouts and kale. To complement your smarter food choices and active lifestyle, consider adding a multivitamin to your routine to ensure your body is getting everything it needs.
